“Adel BinTamim’s Before the Emergence opens with President Jasmine Wallace balancing leadership and motherhood at the White House before leaving for Baghdad to sign a cultural accord. She touches a faceless clay statue older than civilization itself at the Iraqi National Museum and is changed when she returns home. She is haunted by visions, shadows, and a voice that speaks seven dead languages. The Vice President assembles a team of experts, including a psychiatrist, a linguist, a neuroscientist, and religious scholars, to address the President’s deteriorating situation. An interfaith battle takes place, leading to the destruction of the statue, but it was merely a ruse by an evil entity to secure its release so it can return to its ancient body to unleash the end times. What weapons does the president have to fight an evil as old as 10,666 BC?
Before the Emergence is one of the best stories I have read with apocalyptic themes. Adel BinTamim skillfully weaves horror, political thriller, and mythological epic, using faith to drive the action. The mythology is drawn mostly from Christian literature, meticulously built around Azazel’s scapegoat, Legion’s many voices, Barhut’s cursed waters, and seven magical traits. The characters are elaborately developed and genuinely flawed, and the President is a figure of faith, broken, human, weak, but strong in her spirit. The characters around her, including Nancy, Father Antonio, Sheikh Al-Zayat, and Mark Brown, bring something unique to the story: loyalty, intellectual terror, decisive wisdom, and compassion. The writing is cinematic, the pacing brisk, the plot bold, and the writing atmospheric. Overall, this book is mesmerizing.”
