VANCOUVER, B.C., SEPTEMBER 11, 2026
The Green Channel begins streaming Jackals in Johannesburg today, a documentary about what happens when one of Southern Africa’s oldest predators runs out of room in its own city.
Black-backed jackals have moved across Southern Africa for millions of years. Rapid urbanisation has left the ones around Johannesburg confined to green spaces and golf estates, where pockets of them survive and surface now and then in suburban streets.
The film sets that against the City of Johannesburg’s long-term development strategy, which aims to build an efficient, integrated and sustainable metropolitan area. Johannesburg is South Africa’s largest city and the wealthiest city on the continent, and it is still growing.
“Who is pushing who out of Johannesburg’s landscape?” is the question the film puts to residents, farmers and specialists. The answer is either the city’s oldest inhabitants or the population and economy that keep expanding around them.
Producer and director Nandi Mgwadlamba of Sleeves Media and Communications spoke to experts working with farmers and to the team at Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital, who set out in detail what residents and farmers should do when they encounter jackals and other predators in urban areas.
“We have a similar issue here in Vancouver, Canada, except ours is about coyotes,” said Scott Renyard, founder of The Green Channel. “That is why I wanted this film on our platform. This film illustrates that it’s just not coyotes here in Canada that have figured out how to live amongst humans and urban environments. This is an important issue as we try to figure out how to safely co-exist with predators around us without harming them or humans, pets, and livestock. It’s a complicated issue and we hope that we can find more stories about this important issue to bring to our viewers…”
Jackals in Johannesburg also features Wendy Wilson and Tumi Shoba.
Jackals in Johannesburg is streaming now on The Green Channel, the environmental documentary streaming platform.
